Grid-connected PV power has economic and environmental advantages. PV systems consume no fuel and generate no pollution. A PV system supplies power to a specific building or piece of equipment. Where utility power is available, a PV system becomes a storage device or battery. Consumers can use a grid-connected PV system to supply some of the power they need at night and on very cloudy days.

Homeowners with a sizable PV system connected to the utility grid reduce the amount of electricity they purchase from the utility each month. When more electricity than the PV array is generating is required, the excess can be fed (or sold) back to the utility through net metering. When less electricity than the PV array is generating is required, the need is automatically met by utility power. At the end of the month, a credit for electricity sold is deducted from charges for electricity purchased.
